🟡 Bitcoin price wobbles ahead of Fed’s rate decision

Bitcoin (BTC) dipped as low as $59,500 on Binance ahead of tomorrow’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. Market participants are bracing for a hawkish stance from the Federal Reserve (Fed), with expectations set for unchanged interest rates.

The CME FedWatch Tool indicates a mere 4.4% of economists predict a rate cut—the first in over a decade—while a dominant 95.6% anticipate rates to hold steady between 525-550 basis points.

According to The Kobeissi Letter, current market data indicates a 36% probability that there will be no interest rate cuts this year. Four months ago, the likelihood of maintaining current rates was only about 3%.

Expectations have also shifted to just one reduction this year. Previously, the market anticipated six rate cuts. Additionally, the probability of experiencing two or more rate cuts has diminished to 31%.

🔺 Stagflation risk

Amidst this financial climate, the US grapples with stagflation risks as inflation persists and economic growth slows.

The first quarter of 2024 saw GDP growth decelerate to 1.6%, falling short of the 2.2% forecast and down from the previous quarter’s 3.4%. Concurrently, the US Core PCE inflation index climbed from 2.0% to 3.7%.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that recent data does not make the Fed more confident, suggesting a longer timeline to regain economic stability. He expressed belief in the adequacy of current policies to navigate the risks at hand, hinting at sustained high-interest rates without increases.

Bitcoin’s trajectory mirrored these economic uncertainties, dropping below $62,000 earlier in the week due to renewed stagflation worries.

A brief rally above $64,000 occurred with the launch of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in Hong Kong yesterday, but the momentum was short-lived as investor caution set in ahead of the Fed’s key decision.

Looking now at the Bitcoin funding rates heading into the US open in around 7 minutes, we can see general negative funding across the board.

The important part here is that this is fresh. $BTC

We went positive the other day, so all of this negative funding showing up now is fresh negative funding. That means fresh short positions are entering the market.

But more important than the fresh short positions is all that juicy liquidity I was telling you about yesterday.

All of that liquidity that has been building up over the weekend is about to go back.

I do not think anybody should be longing this. I would not be longing this at all. I think longing this is an incredibly bad idea, and I would actively encourage against it.

The setup is there.

The setup is $57,000.

And I think it is going to happen today.

I believe that because I am about to get on a plane, and Bitcoin always does the biggest moves at the most inconvenient times.

$BTC at $62,213 right now is not in a comfortable place, and the 45-minute chart makes that very clear.

Price ran cleanly from $62,400 all the way to $65,400 between June 19 and 22, that was a solid push, bulls had control, volume confirmed it. But the moment it touched that $65,200 zone, sellers came in fast and hard, and the candles since then have been almost entirely red with barely any recovery attempts, that's not a dip, that's distribution.
Honestly? I think $62,000 is the last real line in the sand right now. Verified support sits at $62,202, with the next major floor at $60,980 if that level gives way. Price already wicked below $62,000 once and recovered, but the buying looks thin and unconvincing.

On the fundamentals side, let's be real, Bitcoin just got rejected cleanly at bear-flag resistance, confirming the pattern is still active, and the Fear and Greed Index is sitting at 23, deep in Extreme Fear territory.
My honest take is that BTC needs a clean reclaim of $63,500 with volume before anything bullish makes sense. Until then, the path of least resistance is still lower.
