The Pakistani government has taken a significant step towards launching 5G services in the country by fixing the dollar rate and shifting to the Karachi Interbank Offered Rate (KIBOR) for the upcoming spectrum auction. This move is expected to facilitate the auction process and attract telecom operators to participate.
Spectrum Auction Details
The government has decided to auction spectrum in the 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz bands. The auction will include 15 MHz paired spectrum in the 700 MHz band, 3.6 MHz paired in the 1800 MHz band, and 20 MHz paired in the 2100 MHz band. Additionally, 50 MHz unpaired spectrum in the 2300 MHz band, 190 MHz unpaired in the 2600 MHz band, and 280 MHz unpaired in the 3500 MHz band will also be auctioned.
Interest Rate and Payment Terms
The interest rate has been set at KIBOR + 3%, which is aligned with market rates. The payment terms require 50% of the spectrum price to be paid within one year, while the remaining 50% will be paid in equal annual installments over five years.
