Russia plans to incorporate its central bank digital currency, the digital ruble, into the Moscow subway system as part of a significant upgrade set for completion by 2028. According to NS3.AI, the subway expansion will feature 13 new stations and 27 kilometers of additional lines, allowing commuters to top up transit cards using digital rubles. This initiative is in line with a 2023 Duma bill that mandates the phased adoption of digital ruble payments, starting from September 1, 2026.
