Germany Once Built a Rifle That Literally Shot Around Corners

During WWII, Germany thought:
“Why peek around a corner when the rifle can do it for you?”

So they created the Krummlauf — a curved barrel for the Sturmgewehr 44 that bent 30°, 45°, even 90°, complete with a tiny periscope so soldiers could stay safely hidden.

Cool idea… until physics showed up.

Bullets hated turning corners. They deformed, shattered, and went wherever they wanted. The barrel wore out fast — 300 rounds if you were lucky, sometimes less than 100. At just 10 meters, shots could land over a meter apart.

It could shoot around corners —
just not at what you were aiming at.

Brilliant concept. Terrible accuracy.
History’s reminder that not every smart idea survives reality.
