October 31, 2008 – An anonymous person or group under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.”

The paper described a decentralized digital currency system using blockchain technology — a public ledger maintained by a network of computers without a central authority.
