The Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise has suggested that the classic “altcoin season”—where nearly every altcoin pumps hard at the same time—could finally be coming to an end.
In the past, when Bitcoin rallied strongly, money flowed in a clear sequence: Bitcoin → Top-tier coins (ETH, BNB, SOL, etc.) → Mid-cap alts → Small-cap alts → Memecoins. This created massive, broad-based altcoin seasons that lifted almost everything.
But the game has changed. The crypto market is maturing rapidly: more institutional money, stricter regulations in major jurisdictions, clearer rules of engagement, and far greater competition. The playground is bigger, more professional, and much less forgiving.
As a result, blind hype and “narrative-only” projects are losing their edge. Going forward, the projects most likely to see strong, sustained momentum during bull phases are those with:
- Real-world utility and actual product usage
- Proven traction and revenue
- Clear business value and core fundamentals
In this new era, quality and execution matter far more than memes or short-term stories. The era of “everything pumps together” appears to be fading—replaced by selective, fundamentals-driven winners.
The market is growing up. Only the strongest narratives backed by real delivery will thrive.
