Think about a time when self-driving machines will check infrastructure in urban areas, transport goods between logistics centers, observe power grids, or service the municipal systems.

As opposed to individual services running in distinct software stacks, these machines communicate over a common infrastructure, in which their services can be validated and paid off automatically.

The robot is not the most valuable layer in such an environment.

A system that enables machines, operators and markets to liaise reliably is the most valuable layer.

Everywhere, automation is increasing in speed, except that it is not coordinated. Machines can be more intelligent and efficient, but limited in terms of their economic contribution, when the closed systems are the only environments where they can be trusted.

Fabric suggests another course of action. A place where machine action is verifiable, incentives formalized and automation developed into a networked economy.
