I have watched a lot of projects that talk about keeping our information private. They often claim they can help with many things, but when you ask for a specific example, they can’t provide one. Midnight is different because it is trying to solve problems people are dealing with right now—like helping with artificial intelligence, sharing health information, and ensuring banks follow the rules. These are not just ideas; they are problems that organizations are spending significant money to fix.
What keeps me interested in Midnight is that it is trying to solve these problems in a practical way.
The part about artificial intelligence is what I want to talk about, as it is the most interesting example and also the one that highlights the biggest challenge in Midnight’s plan.
Midnight suggests that artificial intelligence is being held back because people do not trust it with their information. To train AI, you need a vast amount of data, but people and organizations are understandably careful about how their information is used. Midnight’s solution is to use something called "privacy" to ensure data is handled responsibly. The technology they use—called zero-knowledge architecture—allows AI to be trained on data without the person running the AI ever seeing the actual sensitive information. That sounds like it could truly solve the problem of trust.
However, this is where things get complicated. The organizations that hold the most valuable data for training AI are large entities like hospitals, banks, and governments. To get these organizations to change how they handle data, Midnight has to navigate a long series of steps, such as getting approval from lawyers and ensuring every regulation is met. While the technical side of Midnight’s solution is real, getting people to actually adopt and use it is a much harder problem that Midnight does not really address.
When you look at healthcare, this problem becomes even more apparent. Midnight says it can help share health information between individuals and organizations without putting private data at risk. This is a real issue; when patients visit different doctors, sharing medical history remains difficult. But healthcare information is not just private; it is strictly regulated by laws like HIPAA in the United States and GDPR in Europe. The problem is that having good technology simply isn't enough. Most projects trying to solve this get stuck because they cannot meet every single regulatory requirement.
The same hurdle exists with AI. Even if Midnight’s technology proves the data is kept private, a company using AI still needs to explain to regulators and lawyers exactly how that data is being processed. Midnight has not yet explained how it will bridge its technical solution with these heavy regulatory requirements.
The idea behind Midnight is strong, and the technology is heading in the right direction. Healthcare and AI are exactly where this kind of innovation is needed. The real question is: How will Midnight ensure that its technology meets the diverse regulatory requirements of different countries and regions?
