$NIGHT Token Total Supply: The Economic Importance of 24 Billion

Why did Midnight choose 24 billion NIGHT tokens? Here's what the numbers mean.

Current snapshot:

Total supply: 24 billion NIGHT

Circulating: 16.6 billion (69%)

Locked: 7.4 billion (unlocking through 2026)

Market cap: ~$986 million

What makes this supply design interesting:

1. Fixed supply with no inflation. The 24 billion hard cap means no new NIGHT will ever be created. But the DUST mechanism adds something unique. Hold NIGHT, generate DUST automatically. DUST gradually decays. This creates natural balance without complicated burns.

2. Wide distribution matters more than the number. 40% went to community via Glacier Drop (34M+ wallets). 25% for ecosystem development. 25% for team/investors with 4-year vesting. 10% for genesis. When tokens spread across millions of wallets, no single group controls supply.

3. No VC dumping pressure. 31% in reserve address. 19% for community programs. Rest spread across 8M+ addresses. No VC holding 20% waiting to dump.

4. Four-phase unlock prevents shocks:

Phase 1 (Dec 2025): 25%

Phase 2 (Mar 2026): 25%

Phase 3 (Jun 2026): 25%

Phase 4 (Sep 2026): 25%

5. Dual-token economy. NIGHT handles governance and generates DUST. DUST handles private transactions. Price fluctuates without affecting transaction costs.

6. 170,000+ wallets already staking. They get block rewards, voting rights, automatic DUST.

Market performance:

Nov 2025: $0.04-0.06

Dec 2025 peak: $0.12

Current: ~$0.059

Daily volume: ~$10B on Binance, OKX, Bybit

Comparison:

Zcash: 21M supply (Bitcoin model)

Monero: No cap (continuous mining)

Aleo: 1.5B (VC-heavy)

Midnight: 24B across 34M+ wallets

Risks:

7.4B locked tokens unlocking through 2026 may bring selling pressure. Large reserve wallets could move prices. But phased unlocks and foundation ownership reduce dump risk.

Bottom line:

The number matters less than distribution. Midnight spread tokens across millions, staggered unlocks, and separated investment from utility. Adoption will decide the rest.

Your take? Too large or just right?
