1 April – St. Hugh of Grenoble

Bishop & Confessor

Born c. 1053 in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère, France. Canon and teacher at Valence, then reluctantly elected Bishop of Grenoble in 1080. Faced simony, clerical immorality and lay interference; resigned after two years, became a monk at La Grande Chartreuse under St. Bruno (1084). Called back to Grenoble as bishop in 1086, he supported Bruno’s foundation of the Carthusian Order, donated land for the motherhouse, and remained a close friend and protector. Lived austere life amid episcopal duties, reformed his diocese, built hospitals, and was known for humility, prayer and care for the poor. Died 1132; canonized 1134 by Innocent II (one of the first canonizations by a pope).
