Sign Protocol and the Quiet Assumption That More Data Means More Trust
There’s this default belief baked into systems like Sign.
That if you collect enough proofs… trust naturally improves.
More attestations.
More signals.
More history tied to an address.
It sounds reasonable.
Until you stop and ask what all that data is actually doing.
Because proof accumulation is not the same thing as trust.
It’s just… density.
And density can be misleading.
A wallet with ten attestations looks more trustworthy than one with two.
But who issued them?
Under what standards?
At what cost?
And how easy was it to farm them in the first place?
That’s where things start to blur.
Because once systems begin to rely on visible proof layers, behavior adapts.
People optimize for what gets recorded.
Not necessarily for what’s meaningful.
You don’t need to fake identity.
You just need to stack enough “acceptable” signals to pass whatever threshold the system quietly enforces.
And now trust isn’t emerging.
It’s being gamed… politely.
The tricky part is that everything still looks legitimate.
The data is there.
The attestations exist.
The structure holds.
But the intent underneath?
Much harder to measure.
So the question becomes less about how much proof exists…
and more about whether the system can tell the difference between signal and performance.
Because if it can’t, then more data doesn’t strengthen trust.
It just makes it harder to see where trust actually breaks.
And at that point, “trust infrastructure” starts looking less like clarity…
and more like well-organized noise.
