US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad collapsed over disagreement on uranium enrichment freeze duration, as the Trump-led government demanded 20 years, but Tehran offered only 5 years.
The weekend meeting was the first direct encounter between the countries in over a decade and the most senior engagement since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Political scientist Ian Bremmer suggests they may compromise in 12.5 years. The 20-hour talks involved US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
One source said parties came “very close” to agreement—“80% there”—before hitting decisions that couldn’t be settled on the spot.
Officials say dialogue remains alive with a possible second round of face-to-face talks despite Trump ordering US blockade of Iranian ports Monday.
