AI-powered chatbots might make you more stupid

When research scientist Natalia Kuzmina was recruiting interns, she noticed that the application letters she received were suspiciously similar. They were long and polished, and after the introductions, they often jumped to an abstract and arbitrary connection to her work.

It was clear to her that the applicants were using Large Language Models (LLMs)—a form of artificial intelligence that powers chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Cloude—to write the letters.

Meanwhile, during classes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Kuzmina, who studies human-computer interaction, observed that many students were forgetting the content more easily than they had a few years prior.
