Apostle & Martyr

The apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot after the Ascension of the Lord. A faithful disciple of Jesus from the very beginning of His public ministry (having witnessed His baptism by John and all His works up to the Ascension), he was selected by lot after the apostles prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:15-26). Matthias was numbered among the Twelve and received the same mission to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Ancient tradition holds that he preached in Judea, Cappadocia, and along the shores of the Black Sea, and was martyred by crucifixion or stoning in Jerusalem or Ethiopia. Little is known of his life, yet his quiet fidelity earned him a place among the foundational pillars of the Church.

“Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen.” (Acts 1:24)

The hidden apostle chosen by divine will to complete the College of the Twelve — reminding us that God calls whom He wills, and that faithful perseverance in following Christ, even without public glory, secures an eternal place in His Kingdom.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Matthias, grant us the grace to be faithful witnesses from the beginning to the end, to accept whatever place You choose for us in Your Church, and to remain steadfast in apostolic zeal until the end.
