Bill Gates Would Have Outpaced Elon Musk with a $1.5 Trillion Fortune Had He Retained His Microsoft Shares
If Bill Gates had kept all of his shares in Microsoft, he would be the world's first trillionaire today, with an estimated net worth of around $1.5 trillion, according to Benzinga magazine.
In the mid-1980s, Gates owned 49% of Microsoft, amounting to approximately 11.2 million shares. Given the company's exponential growth over the decades, that stake would be valued at roughly $1.4 trillion today, in addition to more than $100 billion in post-tax dividend payouts.
However, over the past years, Gates chose to sell a significant portion of his shares, diversifying his investments through Cascade Investment, while also dedicating billions of dollars to global philanthropy.
