Washington - A series of gunshots erupted near the United States (US) White House. US President Donald Trump was apparently in his office at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred on Saturday (May 23) at 6:00 PM local time. A man initially approached a checkpoint outside the White House complex and began shooting at Secret Service officers.

Secret Service agents then retaliated by firing several shots at the perpetrator. The shots successfully incapacitated the perpetrator, who later died at the hospital.

"During the shooting, a civilian was also struck by gunfire. It remains unclear whether the civilian was struck by the suspect's initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire," a Secret Service spokesperson said, as reported by CNN International, Sunday (May 24, 2026).

The Secret Service said Trump had been informed of the shooting near the White House. The incident did not impact Trump's work.

"Secret Service personnel were not injured, and President Donald Trump was at the residence and unaffected," the Secret Service spokesperson said.

He (Trump) was briefed on the incident by the Secret Service, a White House official said.

Trump and his team are known to be working to finalize negotiations to end the war with Iran. Before the shooting incident, Trump said a peace deal between the US and Iran was getting closer.

Trump made this statement in a telephone interview with CBS News. Trump declined to provide specific details about the deal, but said that "every day it gets better and better."

"I can't tell you until I tell them, right?" Trump told CBS News.
