2. The Grand Expansion: 48 Teams
The most significant change in the 2026 edition is the expansion of the playing field. Moving away from the 32-team format used since 1998, the 2026 World Cup features 48 national teams representing six continental confederations.
This historic expansion has opened the door for several small-island nations and developing football programs to make their lifelong World Cup dreams come true. Countries like Curaçao, Cape Verde, Jordan, and Uzbekistan are making their tournament debuts on the global stage.
3. A Brand New Tournament Format
With more teams comes a much busier schedule. The tournament has jumped from 64 total matches in 2022 to a staggering 104 matches in 2026.
To accommodate the 48 teams safely without compromising competition, FIFA introduced a fresh group and knockout stage structure:
The Group Stage: The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four.
The Advancement Rules: The top two teams from each group automatically advance to the knockout rounds. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams. This means only 16 nations are eliminated in the opening round.
The Round of 32: Because 32 teams advance, a brand-new knockout stage—the Round of 32—has been added before the traditional Round of 16, adding an extra layer of single-elimination drama.
