Binance rose from a startup in 2017 to the world’s largest crypto exchange in less than six months — one of the fastest growth stories in financial history. Founded by Changpeng Zhao (“CZ”), who once worked at McDonald’s and a gas station after immigrating to Canada, Binance grew into a platform processing trading volumes rivaling major stock exchanges.
The company became famous for operating globally without a formal headquarters, calling itself a “decentralized company,” which later attracted heavy regulatory scrutiny. In 2023, Binance agreed to a massive $4 billion U.S. settlement over compliance failures, and CZ stepped down as CEO.
Despite controversies, Binance survived major challenges — including a 2019 hack where over 7,000 Bitcoin were stolen. The exchange reimbursed users through its emergency fund, SAFU, a name that ironically began as a crypto meme after someone mistakenly said “Funds are SAFU” during a livestream.
Today, Binance is far more than a crypto exchange. It has built an entire blockchain ecosystem including BNB, blockchain networks, payment systems, staking services, and digital asset platforms, making it one of the most influential companies in the crypto world.
