Most people are focused on AI apps.
Which chatbot is smarter. Which model is faster. Which tool has the best features.
But I think we're looking at the surface and missing the foundation.
The real question isn't just what AI can do. It's who controls the infrastructure that makes AI possible.
That's why @OpenGradient caught my attention.
Instead of building another AI application, it's focused on the underlying layer: hosting AI models, running inference, and verifying outputs through a decentralized network.
And honestly, that matters more than many people realize.
We've seen this pattern before. During the early internet era, most attention went to websites. Later, it became clear that the infrastructure powering those websites held enormous importance. The same thing happened with cloud computing.
This isn't about saying centralized systems are bad. They're often efficient, reliable, and easy to use.
The challenge is dependency.
When critical technology depends on a small number of providers, questions about access, control, and ownership become hard to ignore.
OpenGradient isn't a guaranteed winner. Building decentralized infrastructure is difficult. Coordination is hard. Adoption is never automatic.
But the project highlights a conversation the AI industry needs to have.
As AI becomes part of everyday life, should the infrastructure behind intelligence be controlled by a few organizations, or should alternative ownership models exist alongside them?
