A new proposal called "The Cat" is causing significant controversy within the Bitcoin community because it could permanently delete Bitcoin Ordinals and NFTs.
This proposal seeks to freeze and delete millions of small UTXOs containing NFT data from the system, arguing that UTXOs are rapidly expanding and burdening the network.
However, many Bitcoin Core developers strongly oppose this, claiming it constitutes asset seizure and goes against the principle of "Bitcoin is irretrievable." They also argue that this method doesn't truly block NFTs and undermines trust in Bitcoin.
Some supporters believe that removing "junk" data is necessary to reduce the long-term burden on the Bitcoin network. However, even they acknowledge that accidentally deleting data at the consensus level would have serious and almost irreversible consequences.
