Ethereum Adopts ZK-Proofs to Achieve 10,000 TPS in 2026
Ethereum is to go through a major transition in 2026, where it is to rely on zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs in order to scale up to 10,000 transactions per second (TPS). The effect of this new transition is to validate ZK proofs rather than re-executing transactions for their validation, which reduces hardware requirements so that smaller hardware devices can also be used.
The Glamsterdam upgrade and Lean Execution Phase will allow validators to have more flexibility, with about 10% likely to implement ZK validation in the first phase. The upgrade will give advantages to Layer 2 networks, including those using ZK-sync, with this being a major step for the Ethereum network, second only to the 2022 merge.
