Solana is preparing a major upgrade called Alpenglow to overhaul its consensus mechanism. It will replace Tower BFT and Proof of History (PoH) with Votor and Rotor, aiming for sub-second finality. Votor aggregates votes off-chain, allowing blocks to achieve finality in one to two rounds, reducing latency to 100-150 milliseconds. Rotor introduces a stake-weighted relay path for bandwidth efficiency.
