It truly has been a transformative time for the Kingdom's ecosystems. As we move through 2026, the progress under Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) has shifted from ambitious planning to visible, "boots-on-the-ground" results.

The Kingdom is currently working toward protecting 30% of its land and sea by 2030, and the stats from the start of this year are impressive.

🐾 The Great Rewilding

The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) has been busy breathing life back into the desert.

* Mass Reintroductions: Over 7,000 animals have been released back into the wild since the program began. Most recently, in January 2026, 124 endangered animals (including 100 sand gazelles and 14 Arabian oryx) were released into the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve.

* The Persian Onager: One of the most poetic success stories is the return of the Persian onager (wild ass) to the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve. Extinct in the region for over 100 years, the population is already growing, with the first wild-born foals recently spotted.

* The Arabian Leopard: Efforts to save this "Critically Endangered" icon are in high gear. With a dedicated $25 million fund, the breeding center in Taif and the reserves in AlUla are preparing the habitat for the eventual return of these elusive cats to the wild.

🌿 Greening the Desert

The goal to plant 10 billion trees is more than just a number; it's a massive restoration of degraded land has already planted over 150 million trees.

* 100 million mangroves. These "blue carbon" forests are essential for protecting the Red Sea's biodiversity.

* to lower city temperatures by approximately 2.2°C.
