I remember the first time I actually thought about what happens after KYC.

Not the process itself we all know it. Upload ID, take a selfie, wait for approval.

What bothered me was what happens after that.

Where does that data go?

Who keeps it?

Who else sees it later?

At the time, I brushed it off. Felt like one of those things that’s “just how the system works.”

But the more I spent time around infrastructure projects, the more uncomfortable that answer became.

Because it turns out…

verification doesn’t end at verification.

That’s where it starts.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth I’ve been sitting with:

Most identity systems don’t just verify you. They copy you.

Your data doesn’t just get checked.

It gets stored, replicated, and redistributed across systems.

And once it’s there, it doesn’t really go away.

That’s not necessarily abuse.

That’s architecture.

I didn’t fully get @SignOfficial until I reframed the problem like this.

It’s not trying to build a better KYC system.

It’s trying to change what happens after verification.

Instead of:

sending full identity data

storing it everywhere

relying on databases

SIGN pushes toward:

issuing credentials

letting users hold the

verifying specific claims only

So instead of asking: “who are you, give me everything”

systems ask: “prove this one thing”

And that’s it.

No spillover.

No extra exposure.

Let’s be real.

Most systems don’t start with bad intentions.

A fintech app needs KYC. Fair.

It integrates with an identity provider. Makes sense.

But then the system returns more data than strictly required.

And suddenly the app has:

full identity details

historical data

linked identifiers

Now what?

Nothing illegal happens.

But:

the data is stored

used for internal models

sometimes shared across systems

And over time…

you end up with a network of databases that collectively know far more about individuals than any single system should.

No single step feels extreme.

But the outcome is.

This is the part that changed my perspective.

It’s not about bad actors.

It’s about incentives.

If:

accessing more data is easy

storing it is cheap

using it improves business outcomes

then systems will naturally drift toward collecting more.

Even if they don’t need to.

Even if they didn’t plan to.

That’s why I don’t think policy alone fixes this.

Because policy fights behavior.

Architecture shapes it.

SIGN’s core idea feels simple when you strip it down:

Don’t move data. Move proof.

Through something like Sign Protocol:

credentials are issued once

held by the user

verified when needed

And the verifier only gets: what it explicitly asks for.

Nothing extra.

This matters more than it sounds.

Because now:

systems can’t casually over-collect

data doesn’t spread by default

verification doesn’t create new databases

It becomes a different kind of flow.

At first I thought this would immediately replace existing systems.

It won’t.

Governments still need:

centralized control points

audit capabilities

regulatory oversight

Institutions still rely on:

existing databases

legacy infrastructure

established workflows

So SIGN isn’t removing those.

It’s sitting underneath them.

Trying to make interactions cleaner.

More controlled.

More deliberate.

From a trading perspective, this is where it gets tricky.

Because this kind of infrastructure doesn’t scream value early.

You don’t see:

explosive user growth

obvious revenue spikes

retail-driven hype

Instead, you get:

slow integrations

backend adoption

quiet usage

Which makes the market treat it like:

“not doing much”

But that might be misleading.

Because infrastructure doesn’t show up in the front-end metrics first.

It shows up in dependency over time.

I’m not ignoring the token side.

Supply matters.

Unlocks matter.

If tokens keep entering the market faster than demand builds, price will struggle.

That’s just reality.

So even if the architecture makes sense…

the token still needs:

sustained usage

growing integration

real demand drivers

Otherwise, it becomes one of those “great tech, weak token” situations.

We’ve seen that before.

Here’s the thought I haven’t fully settled:

If proof-based identity is clearly better from a design perspective…

why hasn’t it already taken over?

Is it:

technical complexity

institutional resistance

lack of standards

or just inertia

Because better systems don’t always win.

Compatible systems do.

And that’s a risk here.

I’m watching a few things.

If I start seeing:

more real-world credential use cases

institutions relying on proof instead of raw data

products like TokenTable expanding in usage

then this starts to feel inevitable.

Not fast.

But inevitable.

On the other side:

If:

adoption stays experimental

systems keep defaulting to full data transfer

or competitors build simpler solutions

then this might never reach scale.

And the market might be right to discount it.

I don’t think this is about hype cycles.

It doesn’t behave like one.

It feels more like watching a structural shift slowly form…

without knowing if it will fully materialize.

But one thing I’m more convinced about than before:

The problem $SIGN is trying to solve is real.

Verification turning into silent data accumulation isn’t sustainable.

At some point, systems either:

reduce what they expose

or

deal with the consequences of overexposure

SIGN is one attempt at the first path.

I’m not all-in convinced.

But I’m definitely not ignoring it anymore.
