‘We will get it,’ says US president on Iran’s enriched uranium 🚨
President Trump has again promised to take control of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium for its nuclear programme.
“Look, we’re going to make sure they don’t have a nuclear weapon or we’re going to have to do something very drastic. I believe when it’s put to the people of our country, they will all agree we cannot let Iran get a nuclear weapon,” he told reporters at the White House.
Asked by a reporter if Iran can keep its highly enriched uranium, Trump replied, “No, we will get it. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, we’ll probably destroy it after we get it. But we’re not going to let them have it.”
News reports earlier quoted Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei as saying Iran’s uranium will not be allowed out of the country. However, a senior Iranian official denied the reports, telling they’re “propaganda by the enemies of the deal”.
The official said Tehran’s position has been consistent on the enriched uranium: Iran will “downblend” the nuclear material itself.
“That is the subject of talks in the next stage,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
