Riot police, SWAT, and New Jersey State Police cordoned off a half-mile perimeter around Newark's Delaney Hall ICE facility Saturday after violent clashes between anti-deportation protesters and pro-ICE demonstrators.
Friday night saw fireworks and debris hurled at officers, prompting mounted trooper charges and 6 arrests. Authorities erected cement blocks and heavy barricades to separate the groups.
Governor Mikie Sherrill backed the crackdown to prevent a "bloodbath." Inside, a hunger strike is underway—detainees' lawyers allege worms in food; federal officials say detainees are refusing standard meals.
