# US Post-Quantum Cryptography Deadline 2031: Small Note

The Mandate: OMB Memorandum M-24-03 requires US federal agencies to fully migrate all IT systems to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) by December 31, 2031.

Key Milestones:

· 2026: Inventory all cryptographic assets and identify vulnerable systems.

· 2028: Prioritize and begin migration of High-Value Assets (HVAs) and High-Impact Systems.

· 2031: Hard deadline for complete system-wide migration.

Why it matters: "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" (HNDL) attacks are already a threat—adversaries can steal encrypted data today to break with future quantum computers.

Action Required: Adopt NIST-approved standards (FIPS 203, 204, 205 - ML-KEM, ML-DSA, SLH-DSA). This isn't just federal; any vendor selling to the US government must comply.
