A major South Korean crypto exchange mistakenly sent users over 620,000 Bitcoins — worth more than $40 billion — instead of a small promotional reward.

The error happened on February 6, when an employee unintentionally sent Bitcoin instead of a reward worth about ₩620,000 (≈ $423) to each eligible user.

According to the company:

Most of the wrongly credited Bitcoin has been recovered.

Around $90 million worth remains unreturned because some users withdrew or sold the funds before the mistake was noticed.

South Korea’s financial regulator criticized users who sold the mistaken Bitcoin, saying the incident reveals weaknesses in internal systems. Some experts warn those who kept or sold the crypto may face criminal charges under Korean law.
