Australia’s pension giant, HostPlus, is exploring a move into crypto signaling a potential shift in how retirement funds approach digital assets.
The $105 billion super-annuation fund is considering offering over 2 million of its members exposure to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin through its ChoicePlus investment option, which allows members to self-manage their retirement savings portfolio, according to Bloomberg.
The initiative could be rolled out as early as the next financial year pending regulatory clarity and safeguards around consumer protection. Currently, about 1% of the fund’s total assets are invested in ChoicePlus.
According to Sam Sicilia, the fund’s Chief Investment Officer, there is growing demand from members (with an average age between mid-to-late 30s) seeking access to digital assets as well as a broader trend of institutional adoption across global markets. While pension funds have traditionally favored conservative, long-term investments, rising interest in crypto as an emerging asset class is pushing firms like HostPlus to reassess their strategies.

If implemented, the offering would likely be introduced through the fund’s ChoicePlus platform giving members a regulated pathway to diversify into crypto without relying on external exchanges.
Still, any rollout is expected to be cautious with the fund

investor protections
before fully committing to the sector.

“We’d love to get regulatory tick-off, even if it means waiting another six months,” Sicilia, the HostPlus Chief Investment Officer, told Bloomberg.
“We are long-term investors. Six months doesn’t really move the dial for us.”
Currently, Australians mainly gain exposure to crypto for retirement savings via Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs), which are retirement funds that are set up and managed by individuals as opposed to conventional funds that are managed on behalf of members by institutions. Interestingly, SMSFs registrations were up by ~70% during the 2024-2025 financial year.

Australian superannuation funds manage over A$3.79 trillion in assets (as of late 2023).
HostPlus is the 3rd-largest retirement fund, a super fund in Australia by member count and the 5th largest by assets under management totalling over $96 billion as of this writing. It has shown strong perfomance in hospitality and tourism sectors.
