Crypto Hack Wave Hits Verus Bridge as May DeFi Losses Mount
Yesterday, Today Key Updates
Blockchain security firm Blockaid detected an ongoing exploit targeting the Verus-Ethereum Bridge.
Estimated losses currently stand around $11.58 million.
Peck Shield reported the attacker drained approximately:
103.6 $BTC BTC
1,625 $ETH ETH
147,000 $USDC USDC.
The stolen assets were reportedly swapped into about 5,402 ETH after the attack.
Security researchers say the attacker wallet was initially funded through Tornado Cash, a crypto mixing service often used to obscure transaction origins.
Suspected Cause of the Hack
Early investigations suggest the exploit may involve:
cross-chain message validation forgery,
withdrawal bypass logic,
or an access-control weakness in the bridge system.
The Block +1
GoPlus researchers said the attacker may have used a low-value transaction to trigger unauthorized reserve transfers from the bridge contract.
Why This Matters
The exploit is another reminder that cross-chain bridges remain one of crypto’s biggest security risks.
Analysts say bridge systems are attractive hacker targets because they:
hold large pools of collateral,
connect multiple chains,
and rely on complex verification mechanisms.
