A California jury has dismissed Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, ending the high profile legal battle without examining the core allegations behind the case.

The jury reportedly rejected the lawsuit unanimously after only two hours of deliberation. However, the decision was not based on whether Musk’s claims were true or false. Instead, the court ruled that the lawsuit had been filed after the legal deadline had expired, making the case invalid on procedural grounds.

Musk originally contributed around $38 million to OpenAI during its early nonprofit stage. He argued that his financial support was intended to help develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity rather than to build a massive profit driven corporation.

During testimony, Musk criticized OpenAI’s transformation, saying that turning a charitable mission into a commercial enterprise was wrong. According to his argument, the organization had moved far away from the principles it was founded on.

Sam Altman and OpenAI presented a different narrative in court. Altman claimed Musk was aware of discussions about restructuring the company and had previously supported ideas related to a profit oriented model. He also suggested Musk wanted long term influence and control over OpenAI’s direction.

Despite the public attention surrounding the dispute, the jury never evaluated the deeper legal and ethical questions tied to OpenAI’s transition from nonprofit to for profit operations. The court’s ruling focused entirely on timing issues connected to the filing of the lawsuit.

Musk left OpenAI in 2018 after disagreements with other founders reportedly emerged over leadership and control of the organization. Following his departure, he later launched xAI, an artificial intelligence company that now competes directly with OpenAI in the rapidly growing AI industry.

The lawsuit sparked intense debate within the technology world. Critics argued the legal action may have been motivated by competitive business interests as the AI race accelerates. Supporters of Musk, however, viewed the case as an attempt to challenge whether OpenAI remained faithful to its original mission and public promises.

Although the case has now been dismissed, the controversy surrounding OpenAI’s evolution from a nonprofit research lab into one of the world’s most valuable AI companies is likely to continue fueling discussions across the tech industry.
