From Silk Road to Solitary to Pardon: The Ross Ulbricht Story
In 2011, Ross Ulbricht created "Silk Road"; a marketplace for anonymous, voluntary transactions outside of government control using Bitcoin.
The site operated on the dark web until it was shut down by law enforcement in October 2013, leading to Ross' arrest.
Ross received a double life sentence + 40 years without the possibility of parole for operating the website. Many believe that the government took such harsh action to make an example out of Ross, and to showcase what happens when you fight against a country's currency and power with Bitcoin.
The 29 year old would spend the next 11 years in prison, many of which were spent in solitary confinement.
In 2024, presidential candidate Donald Trump promised Bitcoiners that he would free Ross if he was reelected, and, in January of this year, granted him an unconditional presidential pardon.
Today, Ross is a free man, and continues to champion Bitcoin.
