Lung cancer cases are increasing among non-smokers, and air pollution could be a major factor, according to a study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine on World Cancer Day.

Researchers analyzed data from the Global Cancer Observatory 2022 and found that adenocarcinoma is now the most common type of lung cancer worldwide. It accounted for 53 to 70 percent of cases in non-smokers, with women and Asian populations being the most affected. Unlike other lung cancers, this type has a weak link to smoking, suggesting that environmental factors like air pollution are playing a larger role.

The study estimates that over 80,000 adenocarcinoma cases in 2022 were caused by exposure to particulate matter pollution. With almost the entire world breathing polluted air, experts are calling for stronger anti-tobacco and air pollution control policies to protect public health.
