ZachXBT makes claims against Circle (USDC)
ZachXBT, a blockchain investigator, has severe questions about how Circle handled illegal USDC movements. He says that over $420 million in USDC tied to hacks, exploits, and money laundering was allowed to travel freely, even though the issuer could freeze or blacklist addresses.
In the April 1 Drift Protocol issue, the attacker apparently moved more than $232 million in USDC over CCTP, but Circle didn't do anything right once to stop those transactions.
ZachXBT also talked on a number of previous cases, such as Cetus, SwapNet, Mango, Nomad, Radiant, GMX, and Remitano, to show a trend that keeps happening:
USDC may still be nominally frozen, but steps to execute the freeze were either delayed or only happened after the assets had already been traded or given away.
These claims potentially hurt USDC's reputation, as it has long seen itself as a stablecoin that follows the rules and is closely watched by the U.S. banking system.
