Robots are becoming more capable, but upgrading their intelligence is still slow and complex. Fabric is exploring a different approach through “skill chips” – small software modules that give robots new abilities without rewriting their entire system. These chips could be shared through a marketplace, allowing machines to download skills much like apps.
In theory, a robot could quickly learn tasks such as navigation, inspection, or sorting by installing the right module. The idea also introduces a decentralized network where robots verify tasks and exchange data securely. Still, challenges remain, including security risks, reliability in real environments, and whether a robot skill marketplace can scale.
