Regulation just flipped the crypto game overnight.
On March 17, the SEC and CFTC introduced a formal token taxonomy, labeling assets like BTC, ETH, SOL, and XRP as digital commodities. This removes a major legal threat and opens the door for institutional capital and new ETFs.
But the market reaction tells a deeper story. ETH jumped, Coinbase surged, while many DeFi tokens dropped as “digital securities” rules tighten around yield and governance.
This creates a split market. Blue-chip assets gain clarity and capital inflow, while DeFi faces heavy compliance pressure.
Bullish for majors and institutional flows. Bearish for permissionless DeFi unless it adapts fast.
