Looking back at our digital evolution, Web1 provided us with information, while Web3 delivered money. Now we are entering the era of Web4, widely known as the agentic web, which is poised to provide identity at a massive machine scale.
This technological shift is driving a major change in the demographics of the next internet. Over the course of the next 3 to 5 years, humans will no longer represent the largest online population. Instead, we will be vastly outnumbered as an estimated 70 to 700 billion AI agents begin to come online.
In order to prevent the emerging agentic economy from collapsing into a chaotic landscape of noise and fraud, establishing a distinct identity for every single one of these entities is absolutely essential. The system must be able to answer critical questions about each program. We need to know exactly who the agent is, identify who actually stands behind it, and determine its overall reputation. Furthermore, it must be clear whether the agent possesses the practical ability to own, sign, transact, and get paid.
Because traditional centralized platforms simply cannot scale to accommodate this rapid machine speed, a different foundation is necessary. Blockchain acts as the ideal solution because it is an infrastructure built natively for machines, relying on identity as its fundamental keystone.
