Two members of Congress just introduced a bill to build a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve inside the US Treasury - with a target of 1 million Bitcoin.
The American Reserve Modernization Act, introduced on May 21 by Congressman Nick Begich and co-lead Congressman Jared Golden, proposes purchasing 200,000 BTC per year until the reserve hits 1 million Bitcoin, currently worth approximately $76 billion. Any Bitcoin placed in the reserve must be held for a minimum of 20 years, with proceeds from any eventual sale going exclusively toward reducing the national debt. The US government already holds approximately 328,000 BTC worth over $25 billion - accumulated entirely through criminal seizures - which would serve as the starting point of the reserve.
