China’s nuclear submarine force is expanding at a rapid pace, with new attention on the Type 093B surge and the upcoming Type 095 and Type 096 programs. The latest assessments suggest Beijing is not just increasing numbers but also improving stealth, propulsion, and strike capabilities across its entire undersea fleet.
The Type 093B attack submarines are already being produced at a faster rate, while the newly observed Type 095 is expected to bring a major jump in acoustic stealth and sensor integration. Alongside this, the future Type 096 ballistic missile submarine is designed to strengthen China’s sea-based nuclear deterrent with greater range and survivability.
Analysts say this expansion reflects a shift toward a more balanced nuclear submarine force that could challenge traditional undersea dominance in the Indo-Pacific over the coming decade.
