👀 In recent weeks, China has twice secretly used thousands of fishing vessels to build giant "floating barriers" in the East China Sea, - The New York Times with reference to the analysis of ship tracking data.

In one of the episodes, about 1,400 Chinese vessels stopped the usual fishing and gathered in a dense formation more than 200 miles long. Earlier, on Christmas, about 2,000 ships lined up in two parallel lines almost 290 miles long. Such manoeuvres have not been recorded before.

Experts believe that we are talking about training the sea "people's militia" - civilian vessels that China is ready to use in military scenarios. In the event of a crisis, for example, around Taiwan, such masses of ships can overload sea routes, interfere with the movement of military and merchant vessels, create false targets for radars and actually form a "gray zone" between civil and military activity.

Analysts say that such actions demonstrate Beijing's ability to quickly mobilise thousands of civilian vessels to pressure and control the disputed waters.
