When Data Must Survive Failure and Attack

Many cryptographic schemes will function just fine if everything works right. Walrus is designed to function when everything goes wrong.

A walrus is a decentralized means for storing data in a manner in which it is possible to restore the data in the event certain nodes in the decentralized network fail or perform sub-optimally. This involves breaking the data into a large number of small chunks and distributing the chunks to various nodes. Only a certain number are needed to recreate the data.

This is highly relevant for actual finance. Real finance needs records preserved under the law, proof of transactions, and audits. None of these documents can simply cease to exist if a couple of computers go dark

Walrus looks at high availability. It plans for error occurrence, failure occurrence, and attack occurrence by designing the system to function anyway.
