U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States and India have reached a trade agreement that sharply reduces American tariffs on Indian imports.
Trump said Washington will lower its reciprocal tariff on Indian goods from about 25 % to 18 %, effectively reversing much of the punitive tariff increases that pushed duties as high as 50 % last year amid a trade dispute.
Trump framed the deal as a breakthrough in bilateral relations following a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he described as a close friend and a leader who “gets things done.” Modi responded by expressing gratitude for the tariff cut, saying that “Made in India” products will benefit and offering thanks to Trump on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people.
A central element of the agreement is India’s commitment to halt purchases of Russian oil, a move Washington views as key to weakening Russia’s ability to fund its war in Ukraine.
In exchange for tariff relief, India is expected to substantially increase purchases of U.S. goods, with Trump mentioning potential deals worth over $500 billion in U.S. energy, technology, and agricultural products.
The accord is portrayed by both leaders as strengthening economic ties and opening the door to deeper cooperation, though details on implementation timing and broader tariff eliminations are still emerging ...
