Most users are familiar with warnings about risks. They read about hacks, losses, and mistakes, but perceive this information as relating to someone else. There is a sense of distance between knowledge and one’s own reality.
One reason is cognitive biases. A person tends to overestimate their control over a situation and underestimate the likelihood of a negative scenario happening to themselves. The phrase 'this won't happen to me' is rarely spoken aloud, but often underlies their decisions.
