Ukraine and Russia Agree to Three-Day Ceasefire as Zelenskyy Mocks Victory Day Preparations

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken a wry approach to Russia’s upcoming Victory Day events by issuing a decree that formally “permits” the military parade in Moscow while declaring Red Square off-limits for any Ukrainian strikes. The tongue-in-cheek announcement coincides with confirmation from both sides and US President Donald Trump of a temporary three-day ceasefire running from May 9 to 11.

Despite the truce reports of fighting continue. Zelenskyy visited frontline positions in south-eastern Ukraine where he noted Russian assaults had not eased. Russian sources claimed capture of a village in Donetsk while Ukrainian forces reported strikes on oil infrastructure deep inside Russia including a Lukoil refinery in Perm. A large fire broke out in the Chornobyl exclusion zone after a drone crash though radiation levels remained normal.

Ukraine’s air force highlighted a critical shortage of air defence missiles after months of intense Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. The country is struggling to protect smaller substations with limited resources stretched further by global demands on systems such as Patriot missiles. The World Health Organization meanwhile recorded over 3,000 attacks on Ukrainian healthcare facilities since the full-scale invasion began underlining the humanitarian toll.

Zelenskyy indicated that American envoys from the Trump administration are expected in Ukraine soon to discuss prisoner exchanges and potential security guarantees for any future peace agreement. These developments come as both sides continue to trade accusations and maintain pressure through targeted actions even during the brief pause in hostilities.

The coming days will test whether the ceasefire holds and if diplomatic momentum can be sustained beyond the symbolic Victory Day period.
