A large-scale cyber attack targeting popular JavaScript packages, described as "the largest npm breach in history", has caused panic in the crypto community. However, according to data from Arkham Intelligence, the total amount that hackers stole was only 1,043 USD, a surprisingly small figure given the scale of the attack.
The severity and actual damage
Researchers at #WIZ revealed that hackers took control of a famous developer's GitHub account and injected malware into JavaScript packages. This malware was designed to scan crypto transactions and then change the recipient wallet address. Although Wiz estimates that 10% of the cloud environment contains malware and 99% use the attacked packages, the financial damage was very limited. #Hacker
Reasons for limited damage
According to researchers, there are two main reasons that helped limit the damage. First, the malware was designed to target very specific objectives. Second, and more importantly, the detection and disabling of the attack occurred very quickly, within two hours after it was announced.
