From Bitcoin Critic to Corruption Convict: Bob Menendez Gets 11 Years

Bob Menendez, the former New Jersey senator who once called $BTC a “perfect place for criminals,” is now facing an ironic twist of fate as he is sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption. The sentence comes after a lengthy investigation that uncovered a bribery scheme in which Menendez accepted bribes in the form of gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz car, and large sums of cash. The scheme involved favoring foreign businessmen and governments, including Egypt, in exchange for these valuable gifts.

Menendez, once a powerful figure in the Senate, most notably as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, has fallen from grace after being found guilty of 16 crimes, including acting as an unregistered foreign agent. His criticism of Bitcoin now seems particularly hypocritical given that he was caught in a much more traditional corruption scheme. The conviction marks an ignominious end to a career that, in its prime, was marked by public service, but will now be remembered for corruption and abuse of power.
