Bitcoin Finally Fixes the 'Disk Fill' Bug After 5 Years

🛠️ After 5 years of headaches, developers #BitcoinCore have finally released a patch for the disk fill attack bug – a software 'bug' that has plagued nodes since 2020.

This bug allows attackers to exploit commands like LogPrintf, LogInfo, LogWarning, LogError to force the node's hard drive to write countless junk data. The result? The hard drive gets filled up, performance decreases, or even crashes – particularly serious for low-cost nodes using spinning disks.

📌 In Pull Request (PR) 32604, the latest patch from developer Gloria Zhao was officially merged into the production branch last week. The patch code passed 19 reviews and received no objections.

Currently, Bitcoin Core 29.0 (released on 14/4) is ready to bring this patch to the entire network. However, since Bitcoin Core does not auto-update, full node operators still need to manually upgrade to enjoy this 'bug-killing' fix.

🔎 According to statistics, only 16% of nodes are running version 29.0, while the rest are still on older versions – meaning the disk fill bug will not completely disappear until many nodes update.

👉 The lesson? Blockchain security never stops, even with #bitcoin
