Warning: Shibarium bridge attacked, 2.4 million USD evaporated
The Shibarium bridge, connecting the Layer-2 Shibarium network with Ethereum, has become the target of a sophisticated flash loan attack, resulting in damages of approximately 2.4 million USD. The attacker used 4.6 million BONE tokens to gain control of 10 out of 12 validation keys of the network, from which they withdrew 224.57 $ETH and 92.6 billion $SHIB from the bridge contract.
Response from the project and community
Immediately after the incident was discovered, the Shiba Inu team reacted quickly by suspending the staking function and locking the number #BONE that the hacker had borrowed. Additionally, they moved assets to a hard wallet with a multisig setup to enhance security, while also contacting authorities and blockchain security firms such as Hexens and PeckShield to investigate. Some validators like K9 Finance refused to sign the malicious transaction, helping to mitigate some of the damage. K9 Finance also quickly blacklisted the hacker's address, rendering the stolen tokens #KNINE worthless.
Market volatility but confidence remains
The attack caused significant volatility in the price of BONE, but the price of SHIB still rose 10% in the past week, indicating that the community's confidence has not completely collapsed. This incident serves as an important reminder of the potential security risks in blockchain bridges and the importance of multilayer security measures. It also demonstrates the determination and timely response capabilities of the project team in protecting its ecosystem. #anh_ba_cong
