Germany is ready to participate in a possible international mission to ensure free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, information agencies reported on Thursday, April 16, citing government sources in Berlin. Germany, according to the sources, intends to continue participating in negotiations on the military planning of such an operation, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz will participate in an international meeting on this topic in Paris on Friday, April 17.

According to reports, Germany's contribution may include the deployment of the Bundeswehr as part of an international operation after the cessation of hostilities and in the presence of a legal framework, a mandate from the Bundestag, and a viable military concept. The discussion may revolve around demining or maritime reconnaissance.

Chancellor Merz of the Federal Republic of Germany stated after a meeting in Berlin with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin that Germany is generally prepared to ensure the security of transit routes in the Persian Gulf. According to him, this requires the cessation of hostilities, a preliminary ceasefire, an international mandate, a decision from the German government, and approval from the Bundestag. At the same time, Merz noted that "we are still very far from all of this."

Negotiations in Paris

At the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will also participate in the negotiations in Paris. Numerous other supporters of a possible mission in the Persian Gulf will join the meeting via video link.

The issue of the participation of American armed forces in the mission will also be a subject of discussion, said Merz. "There are strong arguments in favor of this, but in this case, a ceasefire and a corresponding decision from the German government within the framework of the collective security system are also necessary. And we will discuss this together and make a decision if necessary," added the Chancellor.

The German Navy has ten specialized ships for searching and destroying mines. For maritime reconnaissance, the Bundeswehr will be able to deploy a naval logistics base in Djibouti, which has been operational since 2002 and is located in a strategically advantageous position. The possibility of unloading NATO allies in the North Atlantic is also being considered.
