President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of the Workers' Party (PT), made harsh criticisms of Donald Trump throughout the United States election campaign, openly declaring his preference for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. After Trump's victory was confirmed, Lula used social media to acknowledge the result and emphasize his respect for democracy. "Democracy is the voice of the people and must always be respected," wrote the Brazilian president.

Lula, however, had already made several strong statements against the former Republican president before the election results, describing Trump as a risk to democratic stability. In an interview with RedeTV, Lula explained that, despite their political differences, he wants to maintain a respectful and institutional relationship with Trump: “The civilized coexistence that I already had with Bush – who was from the Republican Party – that I already had with Obama, that I already had with Biden. This is the relationship that I want to establish, a relationship between two heads of state, each representing their country, each with their own national interests.”
